In most of our projects, AI means a specific, narrow task done automatically that a person used to do manually — reading a document and pulling out the right fields, spotting a pattern in camera footage, predicting which invoices are likely to go unpaid. It's not a chatbot bolted onto your homepage; it's a working part of your system.

A step beyond a single AI task: software that can take a goal, break it into steps, and carry out several of those steps on its own — checking a document, deciding what's missing, requesting it, and updating a record — before a human needs to step in. We use it selectively, for workflows where the steps are well-defined enough to trust to automation.

The layer underneath most of the AI features above — a model trained on your data (or relevant existing data) to recognise patterns and get better with more examples, rather than following a fixed set of rules a developer wrote by hand. We use it where patterns genuinely exist in your data and a rules-based system would be brittle or high-maintenance.

Off-the-shelf tools are fast to start with but force your team to adapt to someone else's workflow, and they get expensive or limiting once you outgrow the basic plan. Custom software costs more upfront but is built around your business specifically, and you own it — no per-seat pricing creeping up as you grow.
